The city was founded as early as the 3rd century BC by a group of Illyrian tribes, and it flourished as a major commercial and cultural center under the Romans. It was home to a large population of up to 60,000 people at its peak, during the reign of emperor Diocletian in the late 3rd century AD. The city was surrounded by a wall and was filled with public buildings, temples, baths, and an amphitheater.
